Dr. Spencer Silver, a scientist at the 3M company in the United States, invented the adhesive used in post–it notes in 1968, when he was actually trying to develop a super–strong adhesive. Six years later, his colleague Art Fry thought of an application for it: he wanted something to anchor a bookmark in his hymn book.
